What Are Sash Windows?

A timeless style, with all of the benefits of modern glazing.
Sometimes known as vertical sliders, sash windows offer the traditional look of a period home, with the benefits of modern glazing technology. Sash windows are made up of two glass panels called ‘sashes’ which move on a vertical slider. Single-hung sashes have one moving panel, while both sashes move in a double-hung slide. Instead of hinges they operate using counterbalanced weights hidden inside the frames or with a concealed spring-loaded mechanism.

The great part about sash windows is that you don’t lose any space! Unlike casement windows, sash windows don’t open inwards or outwards but instead open when slid up the vertical slider. This allows you to create a cooling circular airflow when opened without space being taken up inside or out of your home. Some sash windows can also be tilted open, allowing for easy maintenance/cleaning and more ventilation. At Estuary Windows, we love the sash window as it adds excellent character to newly built and older homes alike.

Why Buy Sash Windows?

Sash windows are a timeless style that blends tradition, practicality, and versatility while keeping an authentic design. Their smooth sliding mechanisms and slim frames maximise natural light while providing excellent ventilation through precise airflow control. Built from quality uPVC or timber and paired with advanced glazing, our sash windows offer superior energy efficiency, helping to maintain your home temperature year-round. On top of saving you money, modern sash windows are built to last, making them durable and easy to maintain with the tilt of a window. At Estuary Windows, we have a wide range of colours, styles, and finishes that suit every home. The traditional look can then be completed with optional sash ‘horns’ on the outside, window lifts on the inside, and Georgian bars.

In addition to their visual appeal, sash windows add value to your property with their traditional charm, reduce external noise, and save you space through their vertical sliding mechanisms, making them an ideal upgrade for any property.

Key Features

Energy Efficiency

Sash windows are fitted with double or A++ rated triple glazing and strong seals that provide excellent energy efficiency.

Saftey & Security

By incorporating two to three layers of glazing alongside secure fasteners, reinforced frames, and restrictor hinges, sash windows guarantee the safety of children, pets, and even adults within your home as well as to ensure security from intruders.

Made To Measure

Our sash windows are all made to measure to meet your home’s specific needs. Made with quality materials, you can pick from a variety of colours and styles, like wood effects, to match your home.

Ventilation

Built with a smooth sliding mechanism our sash windows can be opened fully. The design of this window allows cool air to enter your home through the open bottom sash whilst hot air escapes through the open top sash. Additional vents can be added to keep steady ventilation even when your sash windows are closed.

Save Space

Sash windows open and close on a vertical sliding mechanism. Unlike a casement window, a sash saves space as they do not open inwards or outwards. This saves room in prominent areas of your home.

Easy to Maintain & Clean

At Estuary Windows, our sash windows are fitted with tilt and slide mechanisms. This makes maintaining your sash windows easy and hassle-free as you can clean both sides from within your home.

Double & Triple Glazing

Choose from single, double, or triple-glazing windows. Double Glazing is the most popular choice across all of our products to create a stylish and secure home. Double Glazing is simply two panes of glass with a thin layer of colourless and odourless gas sealed between them. This provides excellent thermal insulation which keeps your home warm and cosy, as well as saving you money on your energy bills! The airtight seal between the window panes also prevents condensation and moisture build-up so your home won’t suffer from damp and mould.

Double glazing is a versatile choice for your home that can be installed in all types of windows including casement, sash, and bay windows as well as in all of our doors and our glass conservatory roofs.

Triple Glazing

First popularised in Scandinavia, Triple Glazing consists of three layers of glass with two sealed layers of colourless and odourless gas between them. This provides twice the protection against cold air from the outside and twice the benefits of double-glazing across the board.

Benefits

Triple Glazing has the superior energy efficiency rating of all our products, boasting an A++rating compared to the A-A+ rating of double glazing. Not only does this keep your home warm and reduce your energy bills but it also helps to keep your home cooler in the summer months.
